Summer is in full swing, which means lots of lake days and happy hours for Austinites. For the team at Social Distillery, it also means more social media updates to balance. We’re keeping an eye on the latest trends in the social world from Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and more to share what we’re learning from developments on each platform.

Movie Marathon

Instagram now allows users to upload long-form videos up to an hour within the app. Although the Instagram Live feature already had longer videos, IGTV is a separate element added to the platform. Top influencers and brands have already begun implementing their content through video—some taking it more seriously than others.

Takeaways

Although hour-long videos don’t seem to appeal to Instagram’s fast-paced layout, this could be a way for Instagram to combat Snapchat’s TV-like content. The videos are shot vertically, giving IGTV a twist of its own that keeps the app cohesive. It’s also an opportunity for more our clients to get creative with their content on Instagram, and keep their audience engaged in a new way.

Moving Toward VR Social

The future of Facebook is 3D. According to TechCrunch, Facebook’s AR capacity is rapidly growing and their next advancement is 3D posts within the Facebook camera.

 Takeaways

Making your posts more and more interesting and interactive across all platforms is where the social world is headed. What better way to engage with your audience than to bring your photos to life? We can’t wait for delicious 3D posts of dishes from our restaurant clients.

Shop ‘til You Drop

Select brands are now able to use shopping tags within Instagram Stories, so users can be redirected to their website even quicker. A sticker with a shopping bag icon will allow users to see more details about the featured product.

Takeaways

As an extension of Instagram’s already popular shopping tags, shopping within Instagram Stories will allow brands and companies even more direct access to their audience. Instagram hopes to promote their platform as a call to action rather than just an inspiration board by integrating clickable features. Anyone with a product to sell will have another way to sell and engage.

An Inside Look

Both Snapchat and Twitter have launched new platforms allowing developers and users access to insights and in-app functionality from other apps. Snapchat’s SnapKit will “enable brands and publishers to connect their apps to Snapchat,” and Twitter Media is full of case studies and how-tos to guide active users.

Poshmark meets SnapchatTwitter MediaTakeaways

Both essential tools for understanding how you are impacting your audience, Snapchat and Twitter are helping marketers and brands have more control over their tools. There is also an emphasis on privacy due to Facebook’s controversial data misuse. For the team at Social Distillery, we’re thankful for the insights and capabilities that these platforms will allow for us and our clients.

That’s all for now, folks! We’ll be keeping an eye out for even hotter social updates in July. In the meantime, be sure to tune in to our upcoming episode of Freshly Distilled, featuring Q&As on the growing world of Virtual Reality, and the power of influencers.
